Elementary Students “Go the Distance” with Video Conferencing

17 06 2008

I enjoyed reading how two teachers collaborated to start e-pals with their classes and the interaction caused the teachers to persue video conferencing. It is amazing how desire leads to solutions. The teachers became leaders for their schools and started video conferencing. Their students had an amazing opportunity to develope relationships with students 40 miles away. What a great way to start students thinking about the world beyond their school.

Good Practices reading

16 06 2008

Many good suggestions were given in the article Good Practices in the Use of Video Conferencing by Geoff Turrell.  It is good to get such information from someone with years of experience in video conferencing.  I am use we will cover some of this information in this weeks workshop, but I feel many things will only be learned by experience.  I don’t want to “reinvent the wheel” if I don’t have too.  Mr. Turell gives a long list of things to remeber to do before, during, and after a video conference.

I read the article- Learning from the Pros: Experts Help Students Move from School to Career

“Animation students link up with professionals for modern-day mentoring” This quote sums up this article. Students in a school in Alabama have a video conference with animators in Hollywood every other Tuesday. I think this is a great idea for students to have mentors in there career field. Students get real feedback from experts. I think this is an excellent program because this will make students work hard on their class projects and try to complete a quality projects. I think in the future we will see more projects like this involve.  This will also student to get a sneak peek of their chosen career.  Students can also decide if they are on the correct career path.

After reading the activity on earthquakes I can see how much more a student can internalize information. The project’s main focus was to teach about earthquakes and how to prepare in the event of an emergency. After going through the activity with the Ocean Institute, students in the UK were to have a better grasp on what goes on in California. in addition, students in the UK were able to connect with students in California.
